For Jamaicans within the LGBTQ+ community, simply existing can often be an act of resistance. In the documentary Out N Bad, director Yulan Grant (aka SHYBOI) explores queer identity on the island and beyond and how pride celebrations, though increasingly corporate in the west, have clung to its deeply political roots in Jamaica. In this eye-opening documentary, art, politics, and power all converge in the dancehall, a space that can prove especially hostile for young, queer Jamaicans. Instead, their fandom and patronage becomes one of reclaiming, fearlessness and “occupying sound as resistance.”
